Damage calculator
Damage, DPS and defense calculator
The damage calculator applies Terraria 1.4.5's defense rules: an enemy's defense lowers your hit by half its value in every mode, while your own defense lowers incoming damage by 0.5× its value in Classic, 0.75× in Expert and 1× in Master (rounded down, at least 1). Hits vary randomly by ±15% before defense, and a critical hit doubles the result. Enter weapon damage, use time, crit chance and the target's defense to get average hit, crit and DPS, or check how much a hit on you really costs.

The formulas
- Your hit on an enemy: damage × random 0.85–1.15, minus half the enemy's defense, at least 1; a critical hit doubles it.
- Enemy hit on you: damage minus your defense × 0.5 (Classic), 0.75 (Expert) or 1 (Master), rounded down, at least 1; then percentage damage reduction (for example from the Worm Scarf or Endurance) applies.
- Hits per second = 60 ÷ use time. DPS here = average hit × (1 + crit chance) × hits per second, ignoring armor penetration, buffs and on-hit debuffs.
- Melee, ranged and magic weapons start with a 4% crit chance; summon damage cannot crit without special items.

Questions players ask
How is damage reduced by defense in Terraria?
For you: by defense × 0.5 in Classic, 0.75 in Expert and 1 in Master. For enemies: by half their defense in every mode. Both round down and never go below 1.
Does Expert mode change defense?
Yes for players: your defense is worth 1.5 times as much in Expert and twice as much in Master. Enemy defense works the same in every mode.
What is the DPS formula?
Average hit × hits per second, where hits per second = 60 ÷ use time and crits add their chance as extra damage. The calculator above does it for you.
