Shimmer calculator: transmutations and Aether location
The Shimmer calculator lists all 287 Shimmer transmutations in Terraria 1.4.5 (type an item to see what it becomes) and shows where the Aether, the Shimmer biome, can generate in your world. The Aether always spawns on the same side of the world as the Jungle, in the outer 11% of the world and at least 200 tiles from the edge, in the Underground or Cavern layer. Pick your world size and Jungle side to get the Compass range to search. Most craftable items are not in this list because Shimmer turns them back into their ingredients.

Where is the Aether?
Where the Aether can generate
World generation picks a random tile in a zone near the Jungle-side edge, then checks that the area around it has no other structures; if the check fails it tries again, and after many failures it widens the zone. That is why nobody can compute the exact spot from a seed without generating the world: only the zone is predictable. The Compass reads distance from the world's centre in feet (1 tile = 2 ft), so the Aether's centre shows as East or West in this range:

In depth, the first zone starts 50 tiles below the halfway line between the surface and the Cavern layer. Celebration Mk 10 worlds use a shallower zone and also turn many water pools into Shimmer.

Where does Shimmer spawn in Terraria?
In the Aether, a small biome on the same side of the world as the Jungle, in the outer 11% of the world, inside the Underground or Cavern layer.
Can I find the Aether from my world seed?
Not exactly. The game tries random spots inside a zone until one fits, so the seed alone does not give a simple formula; the zone itself is predictable (see the table).
What can I shimmer?
287 items have a special transmutation (listed here). Most craftable items are decrafted into their ingredients instead, and some items cannot be shimmered until certain bosses are dead.
