NPC happiness
NPC happiness calculator and town planner (1.4.5)
The NPC happiness calculator gives the exact shop price multiplier, from 0.75× to 1.50×, for any of the 26 town NPCs with happiness in Terraria 1.4.5, from the biome they live in and the neighbours within 25 tiles. Loved biomes and neighbours count ×0.88, liked ×0.94, disliked ×1.06, hated ×1.12; living with two or fewer neighbours adds ×0.95 and each neighbour past three adds ×1.05. Since 1.4.5, happiness no longer decides whether an NPC sells a pylon: any vendor with another NPC nearby sells the pylon of the biome you stand in.

Biome (where you stand when you talk to the NPC):

in the Forest
Content: shop prices are 89% of normal.
Does not sell pylons.
- Solitude bonus (two or fewer neighbours): ×0.95
- Likes the Forest: ×0.94
Neighbours within 25 tiles (green edge = liked or loved, red = disliked or hated):
Drag a head into a town (or tap a head, then tap a town). Each NPC counts everyone in the same town as a neighbour within 25 tiles.

The happiness rules in 1.4.5
| What counts | Price factor |
|---|---|
| Solitude: two or fewer NPCs within 25 tiles and three or fewer between 25 and 120 tiles | ×0.95 |
| Crowded: each NPC beyond three within 25 tiles | ×1.05 |
| Lives in a loved / liked biome | ×0.88 / ×0.94 |
| Lives in a disliked / hated biome | ×1.06 / ×1.12 |
| Each loved / liked neighbour within 25 tiles | ×0.88 / ×0.94 |
| Each disliked / hated neighbour within 25 tiles | ×1.06 / ×1.12 |
| Lovestruck buff (Love Potion) | ×0.90 |
| Homeless, more than 120 tiles from home, or in the Corruption, Crimson or Dungeon | ×1.50 (maximum) |
The factors multiply, then the result is capped between ×0.75 and ×1.50 and rounded to the nearest 1%. Biome checks use the biome where you stand when you talk to the NPC. The Princess has no favourite biome and loves up to three nearby NPCs, but she gets the maximum price if fewer than two NPCs live near her; every other NPC likes having her as a neighbour.
Pylons in 1.4.5
Version 1.4.5 removed the happiness requirement for pylons and added the Underworld and Aether Pylons. A vendor NPC sells the pylon for the biome you are standing in when another NPC lives nearby and you are not in the Corruption or Crimson. The Guide, Nurse, Angler, Tax Collector and Tavernkeep do not sell pylons (the Tavernkeep stopped in 1.4.5.4). The Aether Pylon is not sold at all: you get it by putting any other pylon into Shimmer.

Questions players ask
Does NPC happiness matter in Terraria?
Yes, for prices: a happy NPC sells for as little as 0.75× the normal price and pays you more for your items; an unhappy one charges up to 1.50×. In 1.4.5 it no longer decides pylons.
What does NPC happiness do in Terraria?
It sets the NPC's shop prices (buying and selling). In older versions it also unlocked pylons; since 1.4.5 any vendor with a neighbour sells them.
How do I increase NPC happiness?
Move the NPC to a biome it likes, put one or two liked neighbours within 25 tiles, keep fewer than four NPCs that close, and keep disliked NPCs out of range. The calculator shows the two best moves.
How do I check NPC happiness in game?
Talk to the NPC and choose Happiness; 1.4.5 also shows a price indicator next to the shop.
Did 1.4.5 change NPC happiness?
The price rules are the same. 1.4.5 removed the happiness requirement for pylons, added the Underworld and Aether Pylons, and the Lovestruck buff now also lowers prices.
